Update on Integrated Watershed Management Planning

2015 is shaping up to be a big year for the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance. With the onset of a new year, we are moving full steam ahead with the process to develop an Integrated Watershed Management Plan (IWMP) and there will be many opportunities to get involved.

Here is a brief overview of what the first half of 2015 will bring:

  • Work is currently underway on drafting a written IWMP (Phase One), which focuses on surface and groundwater quality. Once complete, the draft plan will include recommendations for how to maintain or improve surface and groundwater quality in the Red Deer River watershed. A draft is expected in Spring of this year.

  • There will be opportunities for you to get involved in drafting, reviewing, and implementing the IWMP (Phase One) throughout the year - please stay tuned for these opportunities as they are announced.

  • Excitement is in the air! The RDRWA is moving forward with an innovative new initiative, tentatively called the “Water Lab”, in partnership with Alberta Ecotrust. The idea is to assemble a group of diverse, solution-oriented people who will work together to actively explore and prototype solutions to water quality issues. A more formal announcement will be made in the coming weeks.

  • We are currently working on an infosheet that recaps the full history of the IWMP process and describes next steps. Please stay tuned for the infosheet to be released in February.

It has been five years since the process to develop an IWMP began and together we have come a long way. Pausing to look at some numbers, the IWMP process to date has included 760 participants, 25 workshops, 4 background technical reports, and countless emails, phone calls, and team meetings. This year is set to be the year where we put pen to paper and write a draft of the IWMP (Phase One). We would like to thank all those involved to date and we look forward to working with you as we bring this process “to life” through implementation!
